Summary :  Lays Local marketing campaign by Frito Lays is a remarkable combination of CSR efforts and marketing. The company has connected its potato chips line with local community welfare, placing emphasis on Lay's using potatoes grown by local farmers. Lays has also participated in local market events to seek more support from the customers.

I haven't looked at Lays Local information so I feel as if I'm shooting from the hip here. However, I recall a recent NPR interview with Michael Palin that briefly mentioned Lays Local not in the context of CSR per se but as a diet-health issue. The point being, I think, is: will the marketing result in the continued or increased UNHEALTHY consumption of a food that's not really good for you, in the quantities that many people eat them? I like Lays but don't eat much processed food so usually am out of range of this kind of problem personally.

Another thought: content, quality and results sell themselves. I think of Ford's Megacity Mobility initiatives. They don't need to market this [much] because it gets the job done for what it is.

I think that CSR is at a crossroads where Corps are necessarily needing to look at what their doing systemically. Vitalizing local economies is good...but then what happens?
